I've been meaning to do this for the longest time...I get so mad sometimes when fun stuff exclude deaf people from participating in watching or playing with them, because they don't include captioning or subtitles for all the sound based things we can't hear. It's even worse when deaf people spent their money on said items! So this list is a warning list not to buy these things if you're deaf, or have a deaf relative or friend you want to watch or play with.

1. ALL the Xena: Warrior Princess DVD volumes released by Anchor Bay Entertainment. This one hurt a lot because I LOVE Xena, and I've had to go without watching it for years because the DVDs that are on the market have NO subtitles, NO captioning, and have an odd screening effect. Digitally remastered, HA! I can't wait for the day they rerelease Xena with subtitles. I also feel guilty because I asked for the DVDs and got them for Christmas several years ago from my mom. I never had time to watch them until several months later, and by then it was too late to return them. So my mom's money went down the drain. So right now Season 1 and Season 2 is collecting dust in my DVD cabinet. Maybe I'll sell them on ebay?

2. The new SceneIt? games. They look very cool, and are up to date with theme games. The huge con is that half the questions are sound-based, and the dvd has no captioning to let deaf people who want to play to listen along. It was so difficult to play the games when you have to strain to read lips, or worse, sit out when there are no lips to read and it is purely sound. It is no fun to sit out or drag down your team. The old SceneIt? games all worked from questions on cards. I wish SceneIt? had foregone the shininess of using DVDs, and stayed with the cards, or added captioning to all of their sound-based questions. They already have some captioning for other questions, why not all?

3. The extras on most DVDs. They are never captioned when the actual movie is captioned. What, do the studios not think that deaf people want to watch the extras? This was particularly irking because I love Star Wars, and their extras have never been captioned. This one is kind of unavoidable, as the movies themselves are usually captioned, and so it's not too bad, but still...

4. Monty Python and the Holy Grail VHS movie. The DVD is captioned, but for the longest time all we had was the VHS, and it was never captioned. I used to just take a look when it was on, then walk out of the room and go read a book, because there was no point in watching it. It was too surreal and full of quips and jokes to keep up. The funny thing is, when the DVD came out, my mother got it precisely so I could watch it finally. We watched it, and then we realized it was better when we didn't know what they were saying. My mother didn't understand half of what they were saying before, and with the captioning, she understood, but the funny went away. Myself, I was watching it for the first time, and it was...an odd movie.

5. All podcasts. What the hell is up with those, anyway? I see no benefits in having people podcast when they could have a blog, and the rest of us don't have to hunt around for someone to transcribe whatever interesting bits of information the podcaster is talking about. Besides, the printed, written or electronic word lasts a lot longer.

6. The Mythbusters DVDs. This is especially bad since the VHS version of Mythbusters were captioned! Who was the brilliant idiot who thought it was a great idea to remove captioning or subtitles for the DVD edition. Boo!

More to come later...
